A book festival like no other

When the weather is good, the views from the welcoming, comfortable hotel are heart-stopping.

Our programme is eclectic, with events to suit all tastes, mixing genres that include crime, history, memoir, nature, fiction, folklore, poetry, and outdoor pursuits.

We run the Deirdre Roberts Poetry Competition annually and announce the winner at the Hoolie in November. This year’s judge is the brilliant author and poet, Don Paterson.

Music over the weekend is provided by some of Scotland’s finest traditional musicians.

Book sales are run by the independent Highland Bookshop of Fort William who carry a wonderful, varied selection of books on their stall.

For the best Hoolie experience, we recommend booking your accommodation and meals at the hotel where you can enjoy meeting fellow guests and authors at your leisure. Please contact the hotel directly if you wish to book rooms as they sell out fast: phone 01687 462210.

Alternatively, there are a range of other accommodation options around Mallaig if you prefer.

Excellent food is integral to the weekend. Dinner on both Friday and Saturday night is for residents only. After dinner we have live music in the bar, and with no need to drive, a dram (or more) can safely be partaken! Other accommodation in Mallaig is within safe tottering distance.

The Hoolie began in 2016 when hotel owner Sine Davis and author Polly Pullar decided to join forces.

‘We wanted the Hoolie to be unique with everyone under one roof and music in the evenings – a real West Highland ceilidh atmosphere – and I think we’ve achieved that ,' Hoolie Director, Polly, said.

Event tickets will shortly be available to buy on our website where you can now view our fabulous line-up of this year’s authors and musicians.

We hope you will join us. You will be guaranteed A Write Highland Hoolie!
